In the days and weeks to come, I have very little doubt that professional TV pundits will perform a postmortem of the midterm elections. Say what you will about living in a perpetual political cycle, but beating a dead horse never goes out of style.
I’m a Republican, and I’m obviously disappointed. But I’m grateful to Lisa and Trish and everyone who worked really hard. I’m certain there will be a lot of soul searching within our party, so I’ll offer my own very humble perspective.
Back in ancient times they had idols, like the golden calf Moses found when he came down from Mount Sinai. These days we don’t have any golden calves lying about to worship, but we do have elephants and donkeys. I’m not saying or implying that being in a political party is a bad thing. I’m saying it isn’t the only thing, and it ought not be the first thing that defines who we are.
There are countries where the political party is at the center of society and controls every aspect of everyone’s life. It isn’t just the most important thing. It’s the only thing. And I’m a hundred percent certain none of us would want to live in one of those places. So why live that way here?
That doesn’t mean we don’t disagree, or even that we don’t fight. But it does mean we never forget that Jesus doesn’t have a political party. And when we deal with people who have different views on how our government should run, we put the cross before our politics.
So when we look across the aisle, instead of thinking “there’s one of those Democrats,” maybe we ought to think “there’s a brother or sister in Christ.” I’m certain a good number of you do that already, but if you’re anything like me, it never hurts to be reminded. Especially when you’re down in the dumps.
None of us can control a single thing anyone else does. We can only control ourselves and how we respond to it. And as a Republican, I think how we respond to a loss like this matters a great deal. Just to put things in perspective, Jesus died on the cross to save the very people who nailed Him to it. If He can do that, I rather imagine we can get past our own differences.
So while I’m disappointed in the outcome, my true north doesn’t depend on who is in the Governor’s Mansion or the Senate or even the White House. And when I woke up this morning, I needed to remind myself of that. God is as much in control today as He was yesterday.
